A White Egret perches on a wooden dock railing while the gentle breeze at his back floats fine white feathers outwards against a background of the turquoise-blue tropical water surrounding Sanibel Island in Florida. The White egret is also known as a Little White Heron, and as the "Golden Slippers" due to its bright gold feet. I used a photo taken by my SIL for a reference for this piece. I chose soft pastel golds and orchids for the shadowing to convey the softness and delicacy of the feathers.
Regardless of which medium I'm working in, it always comes down to color for me. The way color shows up in the world fascinates me. Animals, plants, water, clouds, light.... painting is always about trying to capture the subtle shifts and the grand harmonies that make my heart sing. After 3 years at Cooper School of Art in Cleveland OH, I spent 20 years as a partner in a ceramic arts studio. After which I returned to school and earned my B.F.A., followed by an MA focusing on Art History. In addition, I took 2 years of courses at Rhode Island School of Design, focusing on web and digital art for print. I've been doing digital art for a publisher for over 20 years, which keeps me researching some very interesting topics! ...
