I took reference pictures for this painting in the Ding Darling Wildlife Habitat on Sanibel Island in FL. The leaves from the red Mangroves fall into the water, and the tannic acid turns the water red. All of the plants represented are also native to Florida.
Regardless of which medium I'm working in, it always comes down to color for me. The way color shows up in the world fascinates me. Animals, plants, water, clouds, light.... painting is always about trying to capture the subtle shifts and the grand harmonies that make my heart sing. After 3 years at Cooper School of Art in Cleveland OH, I spent 20 years as a partner in a ceramic arts studio. After which I returned to school and earned my B.F.A., followed by an MA focusing on Art History. In addition, I took 2 years of courses at Rhode Island School of Design, focusing on web and digital art for print. I've been doing digital art for a publisher for over 20 years, which keeps me researching some very interesting topics! ...
